Does the Fitbit Air Track Steps? Honest Review

Have you ever thought about whether the Fitbit Air will track your steps? If yes, then the answer is very simple. Yes, it will track your steps, but there’s a catch.

The device is able to track your steps daily and for that you have to open the Google Health app, where right away you can see your step counts.

You can see the actual graph of hours where it will show you the exact steps you have done and also it will show you the previous day, weeks, month or even a year of steps tracking data.

Is step tracking working fine on Fitbit Air?

Well, there are a few negatives in this Fitbit Air. So if I have to compare it with my smartwatch, obviously that is going to count the steps, but in my opinion, some smartwatches such as Huawei are really best when it comes to counting steps.

But if you are wearing this band and simply go for a long walk, then it will give you good steps tracking data because I think this is built for long walks or it might be dedicated for long walks because it absolutely counts the steps perfectly.

Where it completely fails?

The actual problem starts when you simply wear this band at home and start walking or having a small walk, because you might have done some short walks or maybe you walk indoors, and for that it will not give you the accurate step count.

Smartwatches vs Fitbit Air

Maybe walking for 10 or 20 steps and then stopping and walking again, or you might have sat down and then gotten up and started walking again, kind of stuff then this band will completely fail compared to any other smartwatch.

For example, if you have an Apple Watch, then it will give you pretty decent step counts compared to this Fitbit Air.

Real world numbers (Difference is huge)

Actually, two days back I started using this Fitbit Air for basic walks outdoors and I also did some mixed walking around my house and the result was something like this.

Basically, I recorded 3200 steps on Fitbit Air but on the other hand in my Apple Watch, it was showing me 4600 steps, and even my Huawei smartwatch was showing me a very similar result, so for me this Fitbit is totally inaccurate for small walks.

Fitbit Air VS Fitbit Charge 6?

I have used Fitbit Charge 6 and now using this Fitbit Air and for me the comparison is completely different.

Fitbit Air vs Charge 6

If you want to switch from Fitbit Charge 6 to Fitbit Air, then obviously you will see a major difference like two or three times, and this isn’t bad at all.

But in the market there are many five dollar Chinese watches available which will do tracking like this for long walks without any problems, so if you are one of them who is currently using Fitbit Charge 6, then I don’t think you need to upgrade to Fitbit Air.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the Fitbit Air is doing basic tasks very accurately and we cannot compare it with any smartwatch, but if you want actual accurate data to track your fitness, then I would suggest not going for Fitbit Air because there are more accurate bands available in the market.

And for the best algorithms, you should probably go with Samsung Galaxy watches, or even Apple Watch will do the task, so choose your tracking device wisely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Is Fitbit Air’s step counter more or less accurate than Fitbit Charge 6?
I think this both devices share the same underlying sensors, and because of that, we get less accurate data.

Q2. Can you see hourly step data?
Yes, you can check hourly step data in the Google Health app. Not just hourly, but also day, week, and month data is available.

Q3. Does wearing it looser affect step accuracy?
Yes, if it is not giving you consistent readings, that means you need to wear it properly.
